Chapter 12 Spelling Due Dec. 14th

Spelling words should be compatible with the student's reading level. Many are able to succeed with minimal modifications.

Choose one of the spelling activities in this chapter and use it with a student. Again, share your experience in a post of one or two paragraphs.

  1. Since I am responsible for a pull-out spelling group every day, I have used many of the activities mentioned. I almost always categorize the list into groups by word family on Monday when they receive their list for the week. Drill and practice can include writing in shaving cream, rainbow spelling, picture spelling, but the favorite is a form of Cherry Pie where the students spell the words orally several times.

    2. We also use many of the activities mentioned in this chapter. Sometimes we make the student spell the words out loud, but with a partner.

    3. We do lots of activities also that are fun and it seems to work for the kids so they can better understand how to spell the word. We play this game that is fun called Sparkle and they love that game its a game were each student gives a letter in the spelling word and if they get it wrong they sit down and if they are done spelling the word the next person says Sparkel and the next person is out. Its a fun and interesting game.

  2. We have lots of different activities we made this year for our students. We made some pieces have the beginning letter and ending letter and they put either a picture or letters in the middle to complete the word. So far we have done pretty good with this activity. We also do a lot of segmenting and spelling that way.

    1. I like the idea of putting a picture with the word they are learning. This is a great way for them to better understand the words.

    3. The idea of a picture in the middle with beginning and ending sounds is a different take on the picture spelling we do. Thanks for sharing.

    4. That idea is good I also do that with my student my supervising teacher told me that and it works great with long vowels or short vowels so that they know the vowel sounds with the picture that matches it.

  3. Our Freshmen English students are given 20 spelling words weekly. They get new words on Mondays so that they could study them. On Wednesday they have to have each word written 5 times each. On Fridays they will take the spelling quiz in class with everyone else. If the student does good on the quiz then they don't have to retake it. If they don't get a grade then they will be taken out to take the quiz again with us. This time the quiz will be different, it will have each word written 3 different ways (2 misspelled and the correct 1). We will read them the word and instead of them writing the word, they would just circle the one that is spelled correctly. In which most of the times the student will do much better when doing it this way.

    1. I agree with you giving them 3 different options with one word helps them when spelling the word is a bet harder for them.

    2. I like the idea of using the 3 differently spelled words and they have to pick the right one. that still makes the student learn to spell the word correctly

  4. We have students who get a spelling list at the beginning of each week. We see what it is they know but usually we notice that the students get overwhelmed with so many words. We modify the list for them by cutting back on the words they need to learn and this greatly improves there learning ability of learning the modified list. This helps them feel better about understanding the words and helps them become better spellers.

    1. I agree with you that getting many spelling words make the students overwhelmed and it is a good idea to cut back on some of them.

  5. the teacher plays an alphaphet song which has the sounds of every letter and the students have to repeat it. i like this activity so the students can start to know the sounds so when they get old they can sound the word and make a better job at spelling their words. other activity is try them to spell out their names since they are still to little to make alot of words but they have a great start with the sounds of the letters.

    1. I agree. Getting the sounds in when they are younger definitely helps them when they are older.

  6. We do some of the Drill-and-Practice activities. We do the highlighting but we do it in a spelling word sort page. The teacher has them sort there words in shot vowels, long vowels, different spellings, and I made a paper so they can sort them and after they sort the words we go through and highlight the vowel sounds. I tried the fun activities with my older kids like the pudding on a plate, shaving cream on the table and they loved it and I feel like it stuck to them. I do have one student that we let her pick the words that she knows well we tell her read the word and the ones she can actually read we let her pick them. With the common core standards the words are harder then they use to be and she also tries the challenge words and that seem to be better with her then doing all 30 words we just have her do 20 (including challenge words.) the kids also have this internet sight that they have called Spellingcity and it has games so they can learn there spelling words and it also gives them a practice test and gives them a grade and how it should be spelled I think that's a good sight for them.

  7. This year we put together a book full of different sounds like beginning and ending sounds with pictures. It works really good with the kids they like them. They also do rhyming and stuff. We also do the vowel town with kids. It about sounds and and names of letters. That's works really well.

  8. We have a couple things that we do on spelling we use sight word cards with different color to underline the word to sound it out then capable to spell it out when sounding it out works great . We also work in a individual one on one with a white board to sound out begging middle and end of words to spell and say with r and w and s is a big one

  9. One of my favorite spelling activities is #227 outlining spelling words and using configuration clues. I also like #275 tracing letters in spelling words with several different colors. One year I subbed for middle school special ed. and we had a student who had weekly spelling tests over 10 words on the 2nd grade level. On Mondays, he just wrote each word three times, Tuesdays he did the color tracing, Wednesdays he did the outlining and configuration clues and on Thursdays we used a tactile/kinesthetic activity by tossing a ball and spelling each word out loud. My point is to mix it up and use many different ways to learn and study spelling words.

  10. We have used an activity in which we outline the letters to show the tall letters and the short letters so they can kinda match the word to the correct outline. i also work alot with one student on a modified list which is different words for a student. and i work everyday with said student. we also go over the words what they mean, i also like to include words that will affect student personally, such as names of teachers or siblings/parents. if they get an aweful grade, we just retake it and keep studying!
