Writing can be a challenge for many students, more often than not their papers are returned covered with corrections. It is important to encourage students efforts and to place the emphasis on the student's ideas rather than on sentence structure.
Keeping this in mind implement one of the writing activities in this chapter and share your process in your post.

I am well interested in this chapter because we use paper to do work on but when we are working on writing sentences and words we use a letter paper and we put into a sleeve to let them write on the plastic with a dry erase marker and let them try to do it on there own when they mess up or get out of order with a sentence or word instead of us correcting them they relize they mess up erase it on there own and re do the writing it is nice cause they don't get upset when they mess up and they work on their own mistakes
ReplyDeletei agree with you i like that idea we do the same thing it is more easy for them to correct there errors
DeleteI agree that a lot of writing difficulty stems from fine motor development. And it is so easy for a student to lose their place when copying notes from the board. In that situation I usually write most of the text leaving blanks for the student to fill in. This is something that they can do and still be attentive to the lesson. Another practice we sometimes use for students with fine motor delay who are trying to stay on a line is to use a stencil. It is simply a paper rectangle with a line sized rectangle cut out of the middle and laminated. It doesn't work well with letters that hang below the line, but they get used to moving it and repositioning. It does make their writing more legible. I used the SPACE technique, I just didn't know the mnemonic for it!
ReplyDeleteI also write out the notes and do the fill in the blank to it really works
Deletei have one student who has some fine motor development difficulties, however there are no notes in that class room but the accommodations being used for them is a smaller pencil that they can manipulate easier and that makes for them being able to write pretty well.
DeleteI have also used a shorter pencil for a student developing fine motor skills.
DeleteWe use shorter pencils or fatter ones for a better grip they like it like they know they have something in there hands
DeleteI also use this technique.
DeleteThis is a good technique that I am going to do.
DeleteWe have a kid with autism. Some things I do to get him to write his own sentences are. I use a white erase board, I write a sentence at a time and he copies it. Sometimes he has his days and can or wants to do it himself. I also write and leave blanks for him to fill in on his own. The only thing he has trouble with is spacing his words and writing nicer, but he does good for a 1st grader.
ReplyDeletei also help a student with writing by the sentence on the board, after they have told me their idea, and then they write it on their paper.
DeleteAnd as this student grows older, he may find that keyboarding is much easier and will do spaces between words.
DeleteWow for a first grader that's awesome wanting to do things on his own and with having a routine everyday will keep him on task keep up the good work
Deletei aggre with you that is a awesome idea and it is wonderful for him to try to do his own sentences
Deletei work with a student who sometimes has problems coming up with ideas for a writing activity so i generally prompt with personalized type questions, such as what would you do, how would you do it. things that maybe they would do. also this student has problems with spelling and or making complete sentences. so after i prompt on their idea, i will help them put it into a sentence and write it out on the board so they can copy it.
ReplyDeleteWe do the exact same thing.
DeleteJournal Writing 215: Our students in Freshmen English class have to read a library book the first 15 minutes of class. When they are finished they have to write in their journals 2-3 sentences of what they have read. Also, there are times that the teacher will pick a topic for them to write about. When journal writing, there is no right or wrong answer plus they even get a grade on it. I think it helps them become better writers when they put their thoughts into words. We also use a lot of the other activities with our students like mapping, brainstorming, story planners, and story outlines.
ReplyDeleteI agree that writing in journals helps students become better writers this helps them learn sentence structure and helps them with their spelling.
DeleteWhen writing we like to use a couple of different ways. One is us writing what the students say and then they will copy it onto their paper. Some students have a device on an ipad that they use to help them. No matter what they are doing we are almost always there to help.
ReplyDeleteI do this for a student for World History I read him the essay question and I will write his answer on a paper and when he finishes I will have him copy it onto his paper.
DeleteStory Starters is one that we use to help our students. When they are working on a research paper they usually get the main idea but sometimes we need to give them some kind of start and as we check their progress they tend to have difficultly staying on the main idea and just start putting whatever they want. Sometimes their sentence structure is difficult to understand and so we come up different ways for them to get their point across. This helps them have better sentence structure and they become better at writing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you most of our student have difficulty staying on the main idea when writing a research paper, an article, or just a paragraph.
DeleteI work with a preschool students. with the student i work has trouble focusing so what we do is make writting fun for him since he does not know how to write yet we have strait line, circles so he can trace on a paper that is inside of a plastic sheet so he can erase his mistakes and pratice without wasting alot of paper. since he likes cars we told him to start at the green dot and said go go go go go until he gets to the red dot we stop and he loves it. this way we can get more of his attention to work with us and he having fun while he is learning.
