Chapter 10 Reading Due Nov. 30

Reading is an issue for many special education students. Choose one of the forms mentioned in this chapter and implement it with a student.  

Report your results in one or two paragraphs.

We like to do kinda like the flip chart because our reading consists on many learning activities for the day or week we work on certain activities also using level one readers for word site and reading we go through a word list of flash card different each week and go sounds then word reading we work on sounds and sites of the letters in the story I will read then the student will read when he or she has trouble sounding out the word we work on that and move on by the end of a week we are wanting them to be able to read the book it's very interesting week by week how much they can pack in their brain and hold it till it comes time for the sounds and words

    2. i Like the flash cards also. i also do the level one readers ad before we read i ask them to read the word and look for the word in the book wile we read and it works great

    4. I've used flash cards not necessarily for word learning but for being able to tell what the meaning of the word is, or definition, for everyday things. do they really understand what certain things are.

    5. I agree flash cards are very good to use for students this helps them better understand and some flash cards come with pictures which helps them get a better understanding of the words.

  2. I play Sight Word bingo (Form 35) fairly often with my first grade reading group. This time I introduced the new vocab words with some of the old sight words. It gave them a chance to sound out the words during the game, and I was happy to see that some of the students remembered them when it came time to read the story.

    1. Playing a game first to start off with new material is always good, i persoaly thing its good because they actualy want to learn it and try hard to win and have fun at the same time.

    4. We love to use good learning games. That way the kids don't feel like their forced into sitting there and learning. They get to have fun!

  3. i tryed the Flip Chart.it worked great with my student. Word families are great for them so they can get the basics down first. Some of the books some of my kids read are the books with like (cat, bat, hat) and word that are in word families. It helped alot because they know that if they can get the first sound they can get the word because they basicly end in all the same letters.
    I also tryed the Magnetic letters and that worked great so they know how to build a word and sound it out wile they are building the word that they are working on. My supervising teacher also has like these connect blocks and we also do it with those (they are basicly the same thing). But i love the Flip cards for my kids and when they build the words because it just helpes them out alot more instead of haveing they just look at the word and sound it out they actually can build the word and learn more better.

  4. We also have word family wipe-off boards. They get to sound, read, and write the families. Sometimes we have a little competition to see who comes up with the most words for a particular family. They also get some rhyme time in this way.

  5. We play go fish game with some of the students . It has sounds in the game . They learn their sounds easier with this game. We also play other games with rhyming cards and you can use all kinds of cards with them like rhyming cards, beginning sounds, ending sounds, even math cards. They are every good to use with kids. I like seeing them learn them so fast.

    1. That's a good idea when we use the flash cards we have the sounds marked with different colors to sound each sound out to use there tounge to sound out the word it's pretty intresting how fast they catch on

  6. I chose the timeline because I have a student who uses this for World History II. At the beginning of each chapter he has to do a timeline of the dates and events that occur throughout the chapter. Once he does the timeline, we go and do Brainpop on the events that occur on his timeline. This way he gets a preview of what they will be reading and what they will be studying in the chapter.This also helps him better understand the material. We will do this throughout the chapter (Brainpop) to keep it fresh in his head. When it comes to test time it is so easy for him that he even gets good grades on them.

  7. I choose Form 33, Dolch Word List. I have a student who started out with the Preprimer level. We checked all the levels at the beginning just to see what words are the ones he knew. He first only knew five words out all the levels but as we started from the Preprimer words and increased in levels he go to where he learned all the words but five which was awesome. I think this is a great way of showing students that they can learn new word that they didnt know at the beginning. This increases thier reading ablitiy as well as thier comprehension which helps them in all areas of their education.

    1. i was in kindergarden with a student and in our kindergarden they work on the words and you are right it is awesome to see the kids, special ed and gen. ed. learn these words and be excited about it!

  8. As a former Title One teacher, this chapter was familiar territory for me. Readers must have a "tool-kit" ready and accessible to use when decoding and reading for comprehension. In this "tool-kit" they must have decoding strategies such as phonics and Dolch sight words, vocabulary strategies such as prefixes and suffixes and comprehension strategies such as summarizing, story organizers and background knowledege. A common activity that I have used in the past is Form 34 using basic Dolch sight words. There are also free apps for the iPad such as "Play Sight Words Gr. 1 & 2 and "Sight Words List - Learn to Read Flash Cards & Games". If you simply search "sight words" you will find many free or $.99 choices.

  9. i have used some worksheets very similar to form 45 with paragraph sequencing or what comes first, what would you do next ect. usually my student has some trouble getting the events in order so we have to slow down and discuss the actions of what would you do first, well i would do it different but if thats how you do it? alot of times the student will just read a random sentence and decide that is the first sentence, however this student sometimes has an attitude issue and does not want to work so they will misbehave and do the worksheet incorrectly on purpose, other times when they are working really good, we can get through the worksheet fairly well,with only a few hiccups.

  10. We have a student that is a pretty slow reader. We use all different kinds of activities to use with this student. We started out using books where all the words were three letters long. Then we started using flash cards to learn vowel sounds, and much much more.

  11. i choose the form 30, Alphabet cards becuase i think it was easy for my student. he know some of the letter and make the sounds. since the teacher does some of the sound mostly every week with a song he knew couple. he really like this activity mostly becuase it was one on one activity. i think this way he can learn even better sice he gets distrated really fast. i love doing this activity with my student.
